So let’s dive straight into the Memory of lucid dreams … Everyone knows what a dream is, but what exactly are LUCID dreams or lucidity definition? Well, in simple words Lucid dreams are those where a person is aware that he or she is dreaming and that it is not real. Like all other dreams, lucid dreams also happen in the REM phase of sleep. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, this is where our brains a more active during sleep and this is the time you have dreams or visions. A person enters the REM phase of sleep usually after one and a half hours of sleep. An entire night’s sleep can have multiple REM phases at different points of time.

Though the memory of Lucid dreams is fairly safe, lack of awareness on how to practice this can lead to some complications as mentioned below:
- Addiction: Addiction to anything is bad. Some people take lucid dreaming as an opportunity to escape from the real world and live in an alternate world that they have created for themselves. The excitement that this brings, makes them always want to escape into the dream life, most obviously then affecting their waking life adversely.
- Getting trapped in a Dream: Imagine dreaming of a dream in a dream! Crazy isn’t it. Many a time the person who is lucid dreaming wakes up in the dream and is in a state of confusion whether he/she has actually woken up or it’s still the dream that he/she is seeing. Even writing about it seems so confusing, imagine the person living it! No wonder that person might feel being trapped in the dream and feel anxiety because of this.
- Sleep Paralysis: When a person is sleeping normally, the brain cuts the signals that make your limbs move, thus putting them in a complete rest state. Since we are not conscious while sleeping we don’t feel this aspect as much. However, when you are lucid dreaming, you are somewhat conscious of yourself and your body. And the loss of control can make you feel you are paralyzed and unable to move. This can be a very scary feeling. Just in case you are one of those who experience this while sleeping, just believe in yourself and keep telling yourself that nothing is going to happen. Everything is fine.
- Exhaustion: The very purpose of sleeping is that it makes your body and mind relaxed and when you get up you feel refreshed and energetic. However, if Lucid dreams happen to you quite often, you would be somewhat conscious while you are sleeping. Hence your body and mind do not get the much-needed rest to rejuvenate. You end up feeling tired and exhausted the next morning.
- Somniphobia: Somniphobia is the fear of sleeping. Lucid dreams can become so vivid at times that it becomes difficult to distinguish between what is reality and what is a dream. And if you tend to have more unpleasant experiences while lucid dreaming, even though you control it, you start getting scared of sleeping. You feel you will go through the same experience when you sleep and worse, remember it vividly.
How to Refrain the Dangers of Lucid Dreaming
By now we have learnt that there are many advantages as well as dangers of lucid dreaming. So how can reap the benefits of lucid dreams without falling into the dangers?
Here are a few tips that could benefits you:
- Remember that it is just a dream: Keep telling your mind that all this is just a dream and not a reality. More so, these are those dreams which you can control! So, there is no need to panic but to use this to your own benefit
- Don’t make it a habit: Anything that becomes an obsession is not good. Everything should be done in moderation. Do not try to practice Lucid dreaming every night, do it once in a while to reap maximum benefits without getting addicted to it.
- Reality Checks: When you feel you are trapped in your dreams and don’t know how to tell whether it is for real or a dream, try doing something unusual. Try doing things that would be impossible in the real world. For example, try disappearing some things or try creating buildings in a second, etc. If you succeed, you know you are dreaming.
- And finally, learn to lucid dream the right way: Meditating is a very good way of making your min more alert and aware. It also improves your chances of a lucid dream. There are also various techniques available especially designed for you to learn how to Lucid dreams.
